About This Compression Tool
The core feature of this tool is that it runs in your local browser - nothing is uploaded to a server, reducing network transfer and latency. The tool automatically analyzes each image's data and compresses it, balancing file size and quality. After compression you can compare before and after, then download and save. You can also fine-tune compression strength and parameters in the settings. It handles both single and batch compression.
JPEG Compression
This online JPEG compressor re-encodes entirely in your browser with no upload, protecting your privacy. The default quality of 70 is the industry-accepted balance point between quality and size. Adjust it freely with the slider: higher quality means richer detail but a larger file, while lower quality means a smaller file but may introduce blockiness and ringing artifacts. Note that re-encoding an already-compressed JPEG accumulates quality loss - even setting it to 100 cannot restore the original. To shrink it further, consider converting to WebP or AVIF.
PNG Optimization
Converting PNG to JPG drops the transparency channel - transparent areas get filled with black or white, damaging logos, icons and other assets. To keep both small size and transparency, prefer WebP or AVIF: WebP is 25%-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality, and AVIF compresses even more efficiently, both fully supporting transparency. Transparent-free photo PNGs can be converted to JPG or WebP to reduce size, but assets with transparency should never use JPG. Choosing the right format balances loading speed and visual quality.
WebP Compression
WebP supports not only lossy compression but also a highly efficient lossless mode. Compared to DEFLATE-based PNG, lossless WebP is typically smaller while preserving transparency and pixel-perfect fidelity, making it an ideal replacement for screenshots, UI elements and charts. Choose based on your needs: use lossless WebP instead of PNG for maximum fidelity, or lossy WebP/AVIF when you need to balance size. Don't simply equate WebP with lossy compression.
AVIF Compression
AVIF is typically 20%-30% smaller than WebP at the same quality, ideal for scenarios that demand minimal file size. However, encoding takes longer, and some older browsers and legacy systems don't support it yet - so pair it with WebP/JPEG as a fallback. GIF is limited by its 256-color palette and LZW compression algorithm, offering little optimization headroom. Convert GIF to animated WebP instead, which preserves full animation frames and dramatically shrinks file size.
